Biography

Arizona Dermatopathology, a Sonic Healthcare dermatopathology practice, is pleased to include Rossitza Lazova, M.D., as a part of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Lazova is a nationally and internationally recognized dermatopathologist and has a wealth of academic, research, and medical professional experience.

Dr. Lazova graduated from Sofia Medical University in Sofia, Bulgaria, with a medical degree and specialized training in clinical pathology. After immigrating to the United States, she completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York. Following her residency, she completed a fellowship in dermatopathology at the Institute of Dermatopathology at Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she studied under the world-renowned dermatopathologist, Dr. A. Bernard Ackerman.

Prior to joining Arizona Dermatopathology, Dr. Lazova was the director of dermatopathology at California Skin Institute in San Jose, California. Before that, she was a professor at Yale University School of Medicine, Departments of Dermatology and Pathology. Dr. Lazova was the director of the Yale Dermatopathology Fellowship for 14 years. She developed an international program to train physicians from all over the world in the field of dermatopathology. She is the recipient of the 2020 Walter R. Nickel Award of the American Society of Dermatopathology for excellence and outstanding contributions in the teaching of dermatopathology.

Dr. Lazova has an impressive research background, particularly in the fields of dermatopathology and oncopathology. She has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and coauthored two textbooks and many chapters, including some in the WHO Classification of Skin Tumours. In addition to her many publications, she holds a patent for the study of melanocytic lesions by mass spectrometry. She sits on the editorial boards of numerous prestigious journals.

Dr. Lazova has taught many courses and directed numerous sessions at national and international meetings throughout the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia and has lectured in over twenty countries. Dr. Lazova is very active in multiple professional organizations including the American Society of Dermatopathology, the International Society of Dermatopathology, and the International Society of Dermatology. She is currently a member of the executive officers and will be president of the International Society of Dermatopathology in 2025.

Dr. Lazova has full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and dermatopathology.
